The Beginning
A few years ago I
started playing around with web design. I eventually learnt
of PHP and MySQL, and how I could deliver dynamic content to
people from a website. The only catch was, I needed a host
that could support both PHP and MySQL in order for it to
work.
It was then that I started looking for a
host. Since I lived in New Zealand, I figured I'd try and
find a New Zealand host.
I found that there were
plenty of New Zealand hosts, but none of them
appeared to have servers in N.Z.
I
started researching into web hosting. Specifically, why
local hosts were so hard to find.
Bandwidth
Bandwidth is expensive. In New Zealand, there is one
link heading out of the country, that one link is shared by
all of N.Z.
Starting a web host in N.Z. and
targetting international clients would be economically
naive. New Zealand just doesn't have the necessary bandwidth
to remain competitve.
However, targetting local
clients is entirely different.
National bandwidth
is a lot cheaper than international. Local peering networks
such as the
Auckland Peering Exchange
also make it easier to transfer data around N.Z.
As
long as your hosting local clients, who serve local clients,
web hosting in New Zealand doesn't have to be expensive.
SPOON Hosting
With a bit of Lunix knowledge under my belt and the
help of a few talented individuals, I put together a server
that would not only satisfy my needs, but other's as
well.
